Lets cut the perks...

The city of Miami is bleeding money and some of our elected officials and city employees are still reaping ridiculous perks, such as an $800 a month car allowance plus a $200 a month cell phone allowance.  This is outrageous.

City of Miami axpayers are hurting and cutting back just to make ends meet, but their hard earned tax dollars are being wasted on these perks.  The city should cut these perks for EVERYONE.  No exceptions.  With the salaries that some employees are bringing in, a bonus in the form of a car and cell phone allowance is just a slap in the face to all the citizens of Miami.  The rest of us have to make due with our salaries - without additional compensation.  City employees should do the same.  Heck, while they're cutting back, how about eliminating ALL take home cars and personal drivers?

So how much money is being doled out to city employees and elected officials for their cars and cell phones?  Stay tuned...

  1. I completely agree with you on this point. While city employees have been forced to take paycuts and increased costs for health insurance, others have not and have been allowed to continue to receive perks. If the city is in such a dire financial situation, then why do employees still have take home cars and car allowances? Like you said, if everyone has to take mandatory paycuts, then EVERYONE should get paycuts. And by everyone, I mean chiefs, commissioners, and specially friends and family of the mayor. What kind of example does the mayor set by saying employees need to share the pain and take paycuts, but not if you are his friend? People close to him get perks and pay raises while the other employees got big paycuts.

  2. And another sad part of these perks is that they count toward the individual's pension! While regular employees receive pension benefits based upon regular hour salaries (no overtime counts) and any plus items they may receive via contract agreements, the commissioners receive a pension after 7 years of consecutive service (just Gort and Sarnoff at this point - they are still working on a pension type benefit package for the other three - to which they make NO contribution. The money they receive as their expense account is also figured in on their pension calculations so they easily end up with a pensionable "salary" of close to $100,000 while their regular pay is less than $60,000 and then they have the nerve to say the employees are greedy!

  3. Commissioners contribute zero to their pensions. The 7 years does not have to be consecutive. A commissioner could get arrested for public corruption get removed by the Govenor and then come back to get a full pension.
Dunn might be eligible too. Non-contributory pensions should be abolished.

  4. Since first class cell phone service costs $50 to $70 per month why is the City giving staffers $300 per month and more?

What's up with all the take-home vehicles? Graft.

  5. I want to personally thank the citizens of the City of Miami for a great career. I retired last year after spending 30 years working for the city. Throughout, I enjoyed the perks and benefits so generously offered my which included my take-home vehicle which I had for almost twenty years. It sure saved me on wear and tear on my personal vehicle not to mention the price of gasoline. I also enjoyed the use of a city owned cell phone with Verizon, which kept me from having to go out and buy my own and bear the expense. Plus the pension is great. I might not even have to ever work again a day in my life! Thank you once again from a grateful retiree.

  6. 88 of the 100 highest paid employees of the City are in the fire rescue department. They get massive pensions for which they contribute very little. They can retire after 12-15 years but many wait. Why not? The work is easy and the pay like winning the lottery every two weeks.

  7. 15 fire rescue employees make over $300,000 per year.
    Most do paperwork.

  8. To the asshole @ 7:51 stop lying. Fire rescue has to contribute to their pension unlike commissioners. Fire fighters can't retire after 12 years or 15 years and get a massive pension you lying scumbag. If you want a massive pension you have to work 30 years. If the work is so easy why don't you get a fucking job with fire rescue? Just another lazy, jealous, liar, who loves to overstate the facts. Besides the pensions for fire rescue are now capped so there won't be any more massive pensions. You want to complain about pensions with little contributions? Look at the FRS employees who don't contribute to their pensions. Look at the commissioners who get a free cell phone, free car, free gas, free tickets, and free pension.

Don't forget commissioners get a free SUV and a police driver who are paid $140,000 per year or more.

Fire union members contribute mere pennies toward their pensions. Pennies. If they don't like getting paid $185,000 per year plus benefits they can always quit.

  10. Firemen work 3-4 days a week.

What's up with firemen taking take-home vehicles to their estates in Broward County? They don't even pay for gas.
